- Louis Engel Waterfront Park
Ossining’s Louis Engel Waterfront Park (open in Google Maps) is a riverfront park with a lot to offer, located in the Old Village neighborhood. You’ve got beautiful views of the Hudson River, paved paths for walking, benches for watching the sunset, picnic tables with 4 grills around the playground area, restrooms, a playground, Ossining’s only outdoor spray park and a stage used to host movie nights, bands and other presentations. The park also plays host to a number of special events throughout the year.
Located in front of the Ossining Train Station, the park is adjacent to the 3 Westerly Bar & Grill, the Harbor Square apartments, the Ossining Boat and Canoe Club, and the Henry Gourdine Park.
Splash Pad
Louis Engel Park’s John V. Chervokas Playground and Spray Park is great for kids of all ages, with a train for make-believe play, swings for kids and babies, some unique swinging/spinning apparatus, slides and more. The spray park (also referred to as the splash pad, splash park or water park) was resurfaced in 2019, and it looks great!
In recent years the spray park has opened Memorial Day weekend daily from 12PM to 7PM, and closed for the season on Labor Day. The exception is Wednesdays during Day Camp season when it’s open to the public from 3PM to 7PM. The water features are on timers, so if they stop they can be started again by touching the sensor on the top of the post by the spray ground’s entrance.
FYI the other Ossining splash park (smaller and indoor) is at the rec center right next to the indoor pool.
Louis Engel is one of 33+ sites along the Hudson River featuring kayak storage racks installed by Hudson River Greenway. They are meant for short term, non-overnight storage. See more on their dedicated webpage here.
Parking
Parking is available along the front of the park. There is metered parking and very limited free street parking. Note that some of the parking spots in front of the park are reserved for monthly parking permit holders, and some are metered spots. The metered spots are pay-only at all times, but the parking permit spots are free to use on weekends and holidays. Parking can be tough to find at times, especially during events. If you can’t find a spot, you can look for free street parking further up Westerly Rd or up Secor Rd/Main St.

Is the park open for people to visit still during the virus?
yes it is. Only the playground and splash pad are closed.
can i rent a kayak to go kayaking here?
Hi Sofia, the kayak racks at Louis Engel were installed by the Hudson River Valley Greenway and are meant for public use as short-term, non-overnight kayak storage. So the kayaks there are owned by individuals, not an organization.
I would like to know if the splash park is open?
Hi Glauca, the spray park is open for 2020 as of July 6 from 12pm-7pm daily, with a limited number of people at any time.
Thanks a lot Will!
Hi are you allowed to swim in the river at the park? My dad has been swimming in the Hudson all his life and wants to swim in it again. I am against it but want to have the correct information.
Hi Nina, technically there is no swimming at the park. The main beach at Louis Engel has a no swimming sign. I believe this is because they don’t ever have lifeguards there. You can however swim at the beach at Croton Point Park when lifeguards are on duty. They have more info here: https://parks.westchestergov.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=1849&Itemid=3375. If you’re worried about water quality, Riverkeeper has a page that shows the most recent Enterococcus levels at different sites, including Croton Point Park and Louis Engel. Every time I’ve checked it (admittedly not often), it’s been green at those 2 sites: https://www.riverkeeper.org/water-quality/hudson-river/rockland-westchester/.
Can I walk my dog here in a leash? Or is there an area for off leash?
Hi Jennifer, you can walk your dog on leash at Louis Engel. The only off-leash areas I know of are the dog parks at Cedar Lane Park and Ryder Park. To use those you need to register your dog with the Town of Ossining Clerk, then you get a tag and the dog can use the parks. You can find the form here: https://www.townofossining.com/cms/town-clerk
